The Patriot Arms in Chiseldon, closed since January, is expected to be advertised for new tenants "soon", according to minutes from a Chiseldon Parish Council meeting held on 14 September. Owners Stonegate Group told the council the vacancy would appear on their website by the end of that month. As of the time of writing, it has not appeared.

The pub was last run by David Hiscock and Claire Gulliver, who took it on in November 2024 and stepped down just over a year later, citing the challenge of running a community pub while raising twins born four months into the job. A Stonegate spokesperson told Chiseldon councillor Matt Hinton that the group does not yet have the legal right to advertise and reopen the site, but is "working on it", and that the listing will go live once that is sorted. The Patriot Arms also holds Asset of Community Value status, meaning locals get a say if it is ever threatened with sale or redevelopment.

It is, by any reasonable measure, a straightforward landlord situation. It is also, Chiseldon residents have noted, being drip fed to the public with the pacing of a prestige drama that has run out of budget for actual plot.

Episode one, broadcast in January, saw the boards go up. Episode two, several months of silence, was widely regarded as filler. Episode three, the September cliffhanger, consisted entirely of a parish council confirming that paperwork exists and is being looked at. Critics have praised its bold refusal to resolve anything.

"I'm not one to gossip," said Brenda Pask, 72, of Old Town, who has lived there since before it was old, "but I hear that pub's had more comings and goings than our Linda's conservatory, and that's saying something, because the conservatory's had three different roofs and a man living in it for a fortnight nobody's ever explained. In my day a pub either opened or it didn't. You didn't need a council meeting to find out if the doors worked."

Gary Tench, Area Manager at Tench Paper Solutions in Westlea, said the saga had given him an idea for the band. "We're calling the new song 'Pending Legal Right', it's a slow build, no chorus until verse four, very on brand for the situation," he said. "I've told Julie we should pitch it as the theme tune if Stonegate ever option the rights to this as a drama. Working title, 'The Boarding'. Six parts. Nothing happens in any of them. Very now."

A Stonegate spokesperson reiterated that once the legal position is confirmed, the listing will indeed go live, a sentence that has now achieved the same mythic status locally as sightings of a working cash machine in Chiseldon. Parish councillors are said to be monitoring the website daily, in the manner of people refreshing a delivery tracking page for a parcel that may or may not exist.

Residents hoping for a dramatic season finale have been advised to manage expectations. The Patriot Arms, for its part, remains boarded, silent and, according to the minutes, recently the site of some internal work, which some are already calling the most plot movement the pub has seen all year.
