A ranking with no data, by design
This is a piece of satire, not a serious list of the worst towns in the UK. There is no dataset behind the scoring below, no town has been assessed, and no place is being presented as objectively worst.
The format is familiar: choose a complicated place, reduce it to one number, publish a confident headline and leave readers to discover that the method was hidden somewhere below the adverts. Our method is more honest. We have no method.
The completely fictional scorecard
- Roundabout confidence: points deducted whenever a satnav says "take the third exit" and the driver immediately forgets how counting works.
- Weatherproof bus-stop optimism: a purely imaginary measure of how long a paper timetable survives one sideways gust.
- Spreadsheet certainty: extra marks for any ranking whose bold conclusion is larger than its explanation of the data.
- Local pride: disqualification for any town that refuses to be summarised by a stranger with a spreadsheet.
So, is Swindon one of the worst towns?
This satire does not answer that as a factual question. It makes fun of the idea that a whole town can be fairly judged by a mystery score. Swindon has real places, people and daily routines; none of them are represented by this invented scorecard.
